Water UK National Classifications (NC) of entries

NC1 (Low Risk) Shallow entries with adequate ventilation, natural or mechanical, where access is simple and unobstructed and there is no likely risk of flooding.

e.g.

NC2 (Medium Risk) Vertical direct unobstructed access with continuous attachment to a man riding hoist or similar rescue device.

e.g.

NC3 (Medium Risk) When it is not possible to have a person permanently attached to safe line/rescue line. Usually it will be a team entry which moves away from the entry point.

e.g.

NC4 (High Risk) Nonstandard entries involving complex operations which introduce additional risks and require specific controls and rescue arrangements.
